In a study published in the American Journal of Medicine, researchers from Johns Hopkins University found that Viagra sales, in general, fell by more than 50 percent over the past year.
The report, published online Thursday in the, is the latest in a growing trend that shows that erectile dysfunction (ED) is among the most commonly diagnosed medical conditions in America.
Viagra and sildenafil are also used to treat hypertension, and both are approved for other conditions, such as pulmonary hypertension.
But Viagra’s makers are concerned that a new study could show the drug is not being used as heavily as doctors thought.
“The data that we have is very confusing to the American public,” said Michael D. Johnson, the study’s lead author. “I think the most important thing is to tell doctors and patients that Viagra is for women, and that there are some potential benefits of that.”
Viagra is approved for the treatment of impotence or erectile dysfunction, and men’s inability to achieve and maintain an erection during sexual activity. It is also approved for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension, and is used to treat symptoms of coronary artery disease.
Viagra is taken orally in pill form with a single tablet of sildenafil citrate, a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor. It is taken regularly every day for 36 hours, the drug’s nickname for the amount of time that the drug takes effect.
Doctors sometimes prescribe it to treat pulmonary hypertension, but the drug’s manufacturer, Pfizer, says it will not sell Viagra to treat ED.
“We have been unable to find a company that sells Viagra and sildenafil,” said Pfizer spokesman David Hensley.
“Viagra is the one that we’re really trying to convince the public that we can have a good sex life while not having to do the side effects and side effects of other drugs,” said Johnson. “And that we have a lot of potential benefits, and that is why we have made the decision to market it to us.”
The study was presented at a meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine held March 21-23 at the Institute for Reproductive Medicine in Washington, D. C. It was published online in theNew England Journal of Medicine.
Johnson, of Johns Hopkins, said that the researchers had seen the potential benefits of the drug, including its ability to improve blood flow to the penis, improve erections, and even delay the onset of sexual intercourse.
“This is an important finding, but it’s one that we’re not going to get into,” he said.
Johnson, who is also a professor of urology at Johns Hopkins, said that men taking sildenafil had a 50 percent higher chance of experiencing ED compared with those taking tadalafil.
“We’ve shown that it’s not as important as people think, and it certainly is an important finding,” he said.
“And there’s a lot of good things about sildenafil that may not be there, but we are trying to make it as widely available as possible,” he added.
Viagra is the drug’s generic name, and is sold under the brand name Cialis. It is also made in the U. S.
Johnson said that the drug was originally intended for use in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension, but the study was recently published in the
“It’s not in the same family as Viagra, but it has been approved for that use,” he said.
The researchers compared Viagra’s sales to sales for all drugs in the same category, including Cialis and Levitra. Sales in that category were up 35 percent during the year to $8.2 billion.
“It’s very difficult to determine which one of them is the more effective,” said Dr. Steven Nissen, a urologist at Johns Hopkins. “I wouldn’t be prescribing Viagra to anyone if you’re taking one of those drugs.”
The U. Food and Drug Administration said it hasn’t yet approved Viagra for the treatment of ED.
